FAVN

Expedited FAVN

NOTE: A printed copy of the FAVN Form must be included in the shipment.
You will need to register for our online portal to access the Fillable FAVN Form.

What is the veterinarian responsible for?

The submitting veterinarian is responsible for:

  • Accurate completion of forms
  • Sample collection
  • Verification of microchip information (FAVN testing)
    • Scan and verify the microchip immediately before blood collection.
    • Ensure the microchip number on the submission form exactly matches the scanned number.
    • Verify the microchip number matches all travel documentation.
  • Ensuring all required information is included prior to submission

Incomplete forms may delay testing.

The submitting clinic is considered our client and is responsible for all submissions and charges.

Sample Collection and Handling

What sample type is required?

FAVN and Expedited FAVN: Serum is required.

Are separator tubes acceptable?

Yes. However, transferring serum into a non-additive tube prior to shipment is recommended.

Each sample must be labeled with both the animal’s name and microchip number. Tubes that are inappropriately labeled are cancelled without exception.

What is the minimum sample volume?

FAVN and RFFIT testing: 1.0–2.0 mL serum recommended.

Is fasting required?

Not routinely, but an 8–12 hour fast may reduce lipemia.

What are the sample storage recommendations?
  • Refrigerate: 7–10 days
  • Freeze at -20°C for long-term storage
What about hemolyzed or lipemic samples?

Mild hemolysis/lipemia may be acceptable. A simple assessment is to hold the serum tube up to printed text; if the print is visible through the sample, it is generally acceptable for testing.

A toxic result indicates that the submitted sample adversely affected the cell culture system used for testing, preventing accurate interpretation. This may occur with severely hemolyzed, contaminated, lipemic, or improperly handled specimens.

Packaging and Shipping

Please refer to the packaging and shipping guidelines found on Sample Submissions and Shipping.

Results

Samples submitted with the online fillable form:

  • The official results are digital, and no hard copies are distributed. An emailed copy of the results will be sent to the submitting clinic. Quarantine officials will scan the QR code on the FAVN Report for result verification.

Samples submitted with a paper submission form:

  • The rabies antibody titer results are printed on an adhesive sticker and placed on a copy of the “FAVN REPORT FORM” that was submitted with the sample. This is the official FAVN report.
Who receives the results?

Results are emailed to the submitting veterinary clinic.

Certain destinations also receive reports directly from the laboratory.

Report Amendments, Reissues and Test Cancellations

How can amendments be requested?
  • The submitting clinic needs to email the laboratory directly at rabies@auburn.edu for any requested amendments.
  • Amendments are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and according to laboratory policy.
How are reissued reports requested?

Requests must be submitted by the submitting veterinary clinic via the Pathobiology Diagnostic Lab Portal.

How do I cancel my test?

All cancellation requests must be made via email from the submitting clinic directly to the laboratory at rabies@auburn.edu before the sample is processed for testing.
