Serology Sample Submission and Shipping
Please review the requirements below before sending samples. Proper sample preparation, labeling, packaging, and shipping help prevent delays or cancellation of testing.
Sample Requirements
Do not send whole blood. All samples must be submitted as separated serum in a sterile, non-treated tube.
- FAVN testing: Submit 1-2 mL of serum. The sample tube must be clearly labeled with both the pet name and microchip number, even if it is the only sample in the box.
FAVN samples received without the pet name and microchip number clearly labeled on the tube will be cancelled without exception.
- Other serology testing: Submit 1 mL of serum. Label the tube with the pet name and the owner’s last name.
Packing Instructions
Place samples in a sturdy shipping box or small insulated shipper with:
- Serum tube(s) in a sealed plastic bag
- Required submission form(s) or test request(s) in a separate plastic bag
- Absorbent material in case of leakage
- Cushioning material to protect the tubes
- A frozen gel pack
Make sure all tubes are securely closed and clearly labeled.
Shipping Instructions
- Avoid shipping on Fridays or immediately before a holiday when possible.
- We accept deliveries Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Central Standard Time, excluding holidays.
Domestic Shipments Within the United States
- Ship samples so they arrive at the laboratory as quickly as possible, preferably within 2 days. We recommend FedEx or UPS.
International Shipments
We understand that international shipments may take longer than the recommended 2-day transit time; use the fastest reliable shipping method available.
- Place the customs declaration (PDF) and a copy of the FAVN submission form on the outside of the package so they are available to customs officials.
- Clearly mark the exterior of the package “EXEMPT ANIMAL SPECIMEN.”
